Enjoy swimming with the best snorkel equipment

Hawaii Snorkeling?

We are leaving for Hawaii this Friday and have never been there. Myself (65), and my daughter (44), do not swim, but would love to snorkel for the first time. Is there anyway we can do this very close to shore with a life vest and see some incredible things? And NOT drown? Thank you for your ideas.

Yes, many of the beautiful coral reefs in hawaii are about 3-5 feet deep. So you can pretty much walk ( not a good idea ). But yes you will be able to Snorkel with vest very easily. The key is to relax and not put your head in too deep.

Have Fun!

On Oahu theres Haunama bay, the fish will actually come up to you and touch you. they have a booth where you can rent these items from them…water is shallow too,,,,,enjoy, i lived out there until aug 1, lived there for 4 years.

Maybe a glass bottom boat ride or a visit to the aquarium is best.
The ocean is not a good place for non-swimmers.

Snorkeling is a great idea and will be fun for the two of you. You will be amazed all all the great sea life there is while snorkeling. Get yourself an underwater camera. If you don’t you’ll wish you had. Good luck hun.

if it is try to find sharks cove, its great snorkeling and there are lots of fish
im not exactly sure if thats the official name of the area, but some of the locals will proboably know what your talking about
(ask someone that works at a restaurant or shop there)

i dont think you’d want to do this since you dont swim, but theres also a big rock structure thats really fun to jump off

That depends on what Island you’re going to, but for the most part, they all have great snorkeling options which you don’t have to go on a boat out in the middle of the ocean to find.

On Oahu there’s Hanaouma Bay which is famous for it’s reef and snorkeling. You can rent equipment right there and even fish food to get the fish to come up to you.

On Kauai there’s Lydgate Park, which has a completely rocked in swimming area shallow enough for you to stand but with lots of fish for you to see. There’s also Tunnels beach on the North Shore which is famous for it’s snorkeling, if you’re feeling adventurous (it’s not rocked in like Lydgate).

I don’t know about the other islands, I haven’t been there as much, but you can ask your bellboy, valet guy, waiter, bartender, or anyone else who helps you out about that when you get there.

The ultimate best place in Hawaii is where I live, its a place near Kailua-Kona on the big island, theres a bay called Kealakekua Bay, theres a sailboat which takes you there its call the west winds, absolutely the best, its also still has live coral in which many of the other island do not, the hotels here are resonable too try the Kona seaside for cheap rates, then while your here you can see the lava spewing out on the east shore, you can walk right up to it within a couple of feet, but if your stuck on Oahu, waikiki, go to Hanama bay

I went to Hawaii in Aug. 2007. The snorkeling is awesome there! I am not a very good swimmer, I bought a floating tube, which is long and circular, unlike an inner tube (they look like the tubes you put around water pipes to keep them from freezing), at KMart in Hawaii. The tube helps to keep your body afloat. A life vest is supposed to keep your head out of the water, which is not what you want. The locals recommended using the tube. I know that you will enjoy seeing the beautiful fish and corals. Enjoy your trip, Hawaii is absolutely wonderful!!!

I am the same way! And I have a huge fear of fish and sharks! Go to hulagirlstravel.com, they have this article on the Hunauma Bay Marine Preserve. I went there, and I loved it!!!!

Some of the places mentioned, like Shark’s Cove, are not for novice swimmers. But Hanauma Bay would work out very well. It is shallow, with minimal wave action & has life guards. I think the idea of a "noodle" to help you float is a good one. You should have a great time!
