how come in pictures i see people with snorkels but they are like underwater ??
in many pictures and stuff, i have seen people with no oxygen tank or whatever, just a snorkel mask and they are like underwater near coral and stuff. isnt a snorkel for surface swimming so the tube is in the air so air can go in?
but in the pic the whole snorkel is underwater?
thnx
Even with a Snorkel you can dive down further but you need to hold your breath. When you reach the surface you have to blow out to get the water out of your snorkel before you can breath normal again. Hope it helps

You just pretty much hold your breath and do not breath in or out. Sometimes the corals are not far from the surface and you can dive down to look at it. You can still have the snorkel in your mouth but you dont use it. When you come up however you blow hard and the water in the tube will go out

It’s called Free-Diving. There are special snorkels you can buy that seal when immersed, but from what I’ve gathered most hardcore freedivers prefer the classic, simple snorkel. When they surface they either blow out the water that entered or spit out the mouth piece so they can take a full breathe.
Some free-divers do it to test the limits of their bodies by diving to great depths (called Apnea). The current depth record for an Apnea free-diver is 214meters/702ft.
Other popular free-diving activities include photography and spearfishing. It is illegal to spearfish while scuba-diving in most places and bubbles from scuba gear can often scare the wildlife away anyway, so free-diving is the only alternative to scuba.
Free-diving is still dangerous because of things like Shallow-Water Blackout, but it’s sometimes preferred over scuba because of the extra agility it allows.
A perfect example is the video I linked below of Andre Hartman Free-diving with a huge Great White. Would you want 60-80lbs. of equipment strapped to your back, slowing you down with that big guy swimming around in the water with you?
