Wilson Island Great Barrier Reef Queensland

Friday, November 27th, 2009

Australians call the Great Barrier Reef the eighth wonder of the world, and it’s on every traveller’s wish list. Alas, like so many reefs, this 1,500-mile stretch is ecologically fragile. But castaways can set sandal on the ‘new’ Wilson Island knowing that their creature comforts are based on sound environmental principles; heat and light are by solar power and each of the six tents are created out of natural materials. There are separate bathrooms for each tent.

Beachcombing and birdwatching, swimming and snorkelling, reef walks and relaxing in your hammock are what Wilson Island is about during the day. Wining, dining and socialising take place later in the communal Longhouse.

The only way you can get to Wilson Island is via Heron Island.

Wilson island could well be described as the ultimate castaway experience as you will realise shortly.

The accommodation and all the principles of Wilson Island are based on eco principles which are firmly adhered to!

Take a look at photographs at http://www.worldwidevacationspots.com/articles/14/1/Wilson-Island-Great-Barrier-Reef/Page1.html

Wilson Island as previously stated in on the Great Barrier Reef off the Queensland coast, and quite frankly it is difficult to imagine anything more attractive, although the three day Wilson Island Package was about long enough.

Beauty, there is in abundance, but like most of us, I have been spoiled by the 21st century luxuries that we now associate with dream islands, such as luxury bathrooms, mains electricity, to name but two!!

Compensations are an unrivalled natural beauty, beautifully clean and clear water, wonderful coral, and tropical fish to snorkel and see easily.

It is however a castaway experience with six permanent tents. The six tents have been designed to combine simplicity and comfort. Based on a modern beachcombing theme, the tents have raised timber floors, king-sized beds and a private decking with uninterrupted reef views. You will be supplied with everything you need apart from en-suite bathroom, but you will need the complete insect screening, and repellent.

The views from the tents are quite breathtaking.

All electricity is I believe by solar power, and batteries, so none of your electrical appliances will work, and the fresh water is rainwater, so all drinking water is bottled.

A separate building houses six showers and dressing area (one designated for each tent), along with toilet and vanity areas. This I’m afraid took be back to my youth hostelling/camping days which I had left behind long ago.

Entertainment and food are not forgotten; each evening begins with sunset pre-dinner drinks and canapés on the beach. The main course is a candle-lit three-course buffet meal with wine, served in the resort’s entertainment building, the Longhouse.

After dinner, guests can join an evening star-gazing walk or even a beach walk to observe the turtles nesting.

A popular activity for early risers is a walk to an area of the island known as the ‘Flintstone Chairs’. These naturally carved coral chairs offer a spectacular view of the colourful Wilson Island sunrise.

Quite honestly this is a beautiful place, but there really is very little to do, apart from wonderful Snorkelling, and scuba diving. It is a bit rustic for my taste but in fairness that is what is part of the initial appeal.

Two last things, the wines are very good, and there are no children under the age of sixteen.

One Of The Best Tropical Beach Locations Is The Sandy Beach Resort Tonga Islands

Friday, November 27th, 2009

It is situated on Foa Island, Ha’apai Group, and can be reached from the international airport on Tongatapu in 35 minutes followed by a ten minute car ride.

That in actual point of fact is the theory, but it doesn’t always work that way, but the owner meets you at the airport, so if you are even several hours later than expected, don’t worry.

Life at Sandy Beach Resort has its own timetable, and things do happen slowly in the South Pacific, but we didn’t go there for 21st century facilities.

We wanted an escape from the cocoon that 5* hotels have become, increasingly the same, no matter where in the world you have travelled to. What you will find at the Sandy Beach Resort is no pollution, no blaring radios, TV, or for that matter people!!

Boris and his father will look after you very well indeed, and the food in the restaurant is good if a little repetitive, in that it is mainly seafood based, although it suited us fine. You need to remember that there isn’t much agriculture on Tonga, and corned beef appears to be a staple!!

Life here is different, things don’t turn up, like aeroplanes, supplies, so just chill!!

The beach, which is almost on the doorstep of your fale, [chalet, bure ] are whatever you want to call it, is quite the most beautiful beach we have ever seen anywhere. It is very private here, indeed you could walk a few yards and never see another soul.

The water is the kind of turquoise colour you can only dream about, and you can Snorkel almost off the beach, and see beautiful fish. Neither of us scuba dive, but I gather that was pretty good if you did.

This a real south pacific vacation. You do get one of the best white beaches, in fact one of the worlds best beaches, what you don’t get is an international hotel and five star service, but who wants it anyway.

Denia, Spain Is A Great Place To Visit

Saturday, November 7th, 2009

The northern part of the Costa Blanca has many lovely cities, and Denia is surely one of the loveliest. The Costa Blanca extends from Denia in the north to Torrevieja in the south. The weather in this area is typical of the rest of the Costa Blanca: hot summers, warm springs and falls, and temperate winters. There is very little rainfall in any part of the Costa Blanca, so the city of Denia boasts an average of about 320 sunny days every year.

Since Denia is located between two airports, it is easily reachable. People coming to visit either fly into Alicante or Valencia airport. Each one is about an hour and a quarter drive to the city. Once you are in Denia, you may want to explore the surrounding area by renting a car. There are a number of car rental booths at each airport, so getting a car is no problem, but you should make reservations, especially if you plan a visit during the busy summer season.

Denia is a true Spanish town, and not just a tourist attraction. Staying here, you will get the feel of really living the Spanish life. In the more touristy areas, there are so many foreigners you don’t even feel you are in Spain. You can always drive to the larger touristy cities but return to your little corner of Spain. Since Denia is not a tourist town, everything stays open all year long. Visiting off season is not like some other towns where the shops and the bars and restaurants are all closed. Fine dining and shopping are at your disposal at any time.

If you are interested in a spa vacation to relax and recharge, Denia has a number of spas to choose from. You will find them both in the mountain area and in the beach area.
Among the many sites to see in Denia, the castle is one of the most interesting. This landmark, built in the sixteenth century, can be toured any time of the year. The views from inside the castle out onto the surrounding region are spectacular.

Nature lovers will also enjoy Denia. The Montgo mountains are situated between Denia and Javea, and are very popular for walkers. You can go alone, but there are walking groups that make the trip much more fun and interesting. They will know the routes to take in order to enjoy the stunning views over the town and over the water.

Denia has a long coastline with 20 kilometers of clean sandy beaches. Denia has even received a Blue Flag award for the quality of the water and the sand on its beaches. If you are a water sports enthusiast, be sure to take advantage of the beautiful water for these. Dive, Snorkel or windsurf; you can find many shops to rent from. Be sure to check out Les Rotes, a rocky area that is popular for snorkeling and diving and where beautiful underwater life can be viewed.

I’m trying to remember the titles of two childrens’ books I remember reading at primary school in about 1988?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

These books were nicely illustrated and told stories in which the reader was cast as protagonist (though there was no ‘fighting fantasy’ choice element as in "turn to page 10 to go North, turn to page 11 to go South"". Each page featured some sort of puzzle and there were common puzzle themes running throught the book. One I recall as being about a funfair, and some sort of evil plot involving poison gas hidden in light bulbs (one of the puzzles running through that book involved spotting these bulbs). The other book, in the same series, had a fantasy setting and the only puzzle I remember involved a question of where a character could hide having escaped from a castle into the surrounding moat, the answer being that he should use some reeds to form a Snorkel to breathe through.

Hi!
You may try the forum links below , I hope you find your book - good luck .

what is better at burning calories, swimming with a snorkel or regular swimming?

Monday, November 2nd, 2009

In the same time frame I can swim 40 laps by regular swimming and 70 using a snorkel in a pool. I don’t feel tired at all using a Snorkel and not sure which method is burning more calories.

LoLx
I don’r think it really matterz LoL :P
