Where in Florida is a good place to snorkel and scuba?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Me and a friend of mine are planning on going to Florida in September to vacation.

Where would be a good relatively inexpensive ( but not a cheap dump ) place where we can stay sea side to Snorkel and do some scuba diving.

Prefer either a hotel or rent-able condo. for a week.

Key Largo has some great scuba diving and snorkeling. I've gone diving with Ocean Divers, which has dive-and-stay packages with the next-door Marina Del Mar and the Holiday Inn, just across the marina. Marina Del Mar is relatively inexpensive, but it's in good condition and makes for a relaxing place to stay.

The diving in the Key Largo area is great — in particular, I'd recommend doing any reef diving in John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park. Molasses Reef has some nice, colorful fish. There are also some wrecks to dive, like the "Duane" and the "Spiegel Grove".

When I was down there last February, the winds made the seas too rough for diving, unfortunately. I ended up trying kitesurfing instead.

what would be a good backpack for snorkeling/scuba fins to fit in?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

I have some deep see aqua glide fins that I like to take with me to Mexico. My current backpack doesn't fit them well. I need a pack I can carry on to the airplane too.

What is the best way to clean your mask and snorkel after a trip in saltwater?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Just got back from a Snorkeling trip in the sea and have rinsed the mask and snorkel with fresh water, but is there and soap or anything I should use to clean it better? Want to have this set for a long time in great shape!

No need to use soap or fancy cleaners for snorkel or dive gear. The important thing is just to get the salt off, and plain old fresh water will do the trick.

The best way to clean your gear, is to fill a bucket or a tub with warm water, and then dunk your gear several times to rinse it out thoroughly. In some cases I like to swish it around underwater, and maybe rub the rubber parts to ensure a thorough rinsing. After that, let it drip dry and store it in a cool, dry, *dark* place.

Salt and sunlight are the two things that'll kill your gear in no time at all, keep it safe from that and it should provide good use for a long time.

Does anyone know of a store where I can purchase professional snorkeling mask and fins in the Dallas, Tx area.

I went to Academy Sports and they only had generic Snorkeling mask and fins, I want more of a selection.

Try Bass Pro Shops or Gander Mountain.

Can I add a drytop attachement to my snorkel?

Sunday, May 31st, 2009

Does anybody know if I can purchase a separate dry-top attachement for my Snorkel? I have a Speedo Condor snorkeling set but the snorkel is labeled "splash proof dry top" which means I cannot dive under water as it does not completely keep water out. I would like to change just the top of the snorkel and replace with a dry-top one, as I am very happy with the mask and how it fits. Is that possible?

Why do you want to keep water out of the snorkel? Mine just fills with water and then I blow it out when I surface. it's a bit risky, in my personal view, to try to keep water out because it will be a shock if any does get in and you won't be prepared for it. get used to water being in the snorkel when you submerge, and it will become second nature to clear it when you surface.

Snorkeling And Scuba Diving In Hawaii

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

Millions of vacationing tourists visit Hawaii every year. Most of them came to explore the beautiful Hawaiian Islands and volcanoes while some came with the intention to scuba dive in the tropical seas and to explore Hawaii’s magnificent underwater world. According to Rodale’s scuba diver magazine, Hawaii is one of the world’s top ten diving destination for scuba divers.

Hawaii’s marine life is very diverse so much so that there are more than a hundred endemic species found no where else on earth. You can explore Hawaii’s myriads of underwater caverns, reefs, drop off walls, canyons, gulleys and swim with turtles and seals in clear crystal waters. If you are not a scuba diver, you can take scuba diving lessons and then can plunge into Hawaii’s beautiful seas almost immediately.

If you want to go scuba diving, it is best to go in the morning as strong winds often rough up the sea in the afternoons. This is especially so on the island of Maui and that is the reason why dive operators often take divers out to sea early in the morning and terminate the dives around noon or early afternoons.

One of the big attractions in Hawaii is snorkeling. Almost anyone can go snorkeling since all you need is a face mask, a Snorkel tube and a pair of swimming fins. If you have never snorkeled before, most resorts and dive operators can give you snorkelling lessons and rent you snorkeling gear. However, if you can swim, you really do not need any formal training as snorkeling is quite easy.

The most popular spot for snorkeling in Hawaii, especially for the beginner is the Hanauma Bay, on the island of Oahu. Other popular snorkeling sites in Hawaii are the Kee Beach on Kauai island, Hulopoe Bay in Lanai, Kahaluu Beach on the Big island and Kapalua Bay on Maui.

Although great snorkeling can be gotten at all the islands in Hawaii, snorkeling and scuba diving on the Big Island is recommended because of its volcanic activities and lava formation resulting from that. There are magnificent and spectacular drop offs with awesome underwater scenery to watch and admire. Some of the great snorkeling locations there are Molokini Crater and the Kealakekua Bay.

Whether you are snorkelling or scuba diving in Hawaii or anywhere else, always snorkel or dive with a buddy for safety reason and companion sake. Do look up now and then to check that you are not getting carried away by drift current too far away from shore and also to check for boat traffic. Do not touch anything as some corals and sea creatures in Hawaii can pack very painful and venomous stings.

Best place to snorkel off the beach in Caribbean?

Thursday, May 28th, 2009

I am planning a trip to the Caribbean in April. Of Aruba, Turks and Caicos, Cayman, or other place, which is the best place that offers Snorkeling WITHOUT joining a tour? I want to be able to just step to the beach and get in the water and snorkel my heart out…..any suggestions?? Thanks!

Grace Bay Beach on Providenciales in Turks and Caicos. Stay at Coral Gardens. There is a very healthy reef right in front of the hotel.

Go here for some information on Turks and Caicos
